Men's Basketball vs. Assumption

Syracuse, N.Y. – Terrance Bobb-Jones converted an alley-oop off an inbounds pass with 1.6 seconds left to give Assumption College a 65-63 win over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Court.

Bobb-Jones registered a game-high 24 points, including an 11-of-12 performance at the foul line, while grabbing a game best-tying seven rebounds and recording five steals. Ronson Quick, who has 87 total points in Assumption's five wins over the Dolphins over the last four seasons (24 points in Le Moyne's three wins), scored 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the field (3-4 from 3) and grabbed seven rebounds. Kevin Donahue tallied 11 points and dished out five assists.

Freshman guard Qwadere Lovell (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) led the Dolphins in the setback with 17 points, while grabbing three rebounds, dishing out two assists and recording two steals. Junior forward Brian Zapisek (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) scored 13 points and pulled down a game high-tying seven rebounds. Junior guard Nate Champion (Logansport, Ind./Logansport) tallied 12 points, three rebounds and three assists off the bench.

The Greyhounds opened the game with eight of the first 10 points over the opening 2:47. Quick nailed a three-pointer and Bobb-Jones followed with just his third three-pointer of the season and then made a jumper.

The Dolphins answered with nine straight points to take the lead. Lovell made a lay-up, Zapisek scored underneath the basket, Champion buried a three-pointer and then sophomore forward Ryan Romich (Groton, Mass./Groton-Dunstable/Vermont Academy) converted a jump shot.

Assumption (16-5, 13-4) responded with 13 consecutive points to take the largest lead of the game with 8:02 left. Quick and Donahue each hit three-pointers in the streak, while Bobb-Jones made five free throws and Will DeFanti made a jumper.

Le Moyne (11-10, 8-9 NE-10) countered with 10 straight points and 14 of the game's next 16 points to regain the lead. Zapisek had four points in the run, including a game-tying three-pointer with 4:55 left, while Champion had a traditional three-point play, senior guard Gamal Mohamed (North Plainfield, N.J./Immaculata) knocked down a three-pointer from the top of the key, graduate student center Jim Janson (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) made a lay-up and then Lovell gave the Dolphins a 25-23 edge by making two free throws.

The Greyhounds outscored the Dolphins, 10-7, over the final 3:24 of the half to take a 33-32 lead into the intermission. Quick had a pair of lay-ups in the span, while Donahue made a free throw with 13 seconds left for the halftime lead.

Assumption opened the second half with the first six points over the opening 3:38 to extend its lead to seven.

After six points from each team over the next 4:44, the Dolphins scored six straight points to pull within 45-44 with 8:34 remaining. Janson and freshman forward Connor Mahoney (Hanover, Mass./BC High/Brooks School) had lay-ups before Zapisek made a pair of free throws.

Donahue countered with a three-pointer to push his team's lead to four, but Champion made a jumper in the paint and Lovell turned a steal into a fast-break lay-up to even the score at 48 with 6:35 left.

After Jimmy Zenevitch and Lovell traded jumpers, Tim Beinert made a free throw and Donahue made a lay-up to give the Greyhounds a 53-50 advantage. Janson followed with a jumper in the paint and then Zapisek drilled a three-pointer with 3:37 remaining to put the Dolphins in front for the first time since 27-25 with 3:05 left in the first half.

The Greyhounds got two free throws from Bobb-Jones and one from Beinert over the next 1:17 to take a 56-55 lead with 2:20 to play. Romich answered with a lay-up to put the Dolphins in front, but Quick drilled a three-pointer from between the top of the key and the right wing with 1:34 left.

Champion tied the score at 59 with 1:18 left with two free throws, but Bobb-Jones connected on a pair of foul shots 10 seconds later for a 61-59 lead. Romich tied the game for the 10th time with a lay-up off a feed from Champion with 56.7 seconds left. Quick regained the lead for the Greyhounds by making a lay-up with 34 seconds left, but Lovell tied the score for the final time by making two free throws with 22 seconds left.

Assumption had an inbounds pass from left of the basket with seven seconds left, but the Dolphins knocked the ball out of bounds with 2.4 seconds left. Ryan Rozsnaki tossed the inbounds pass six feet in front of the basket to a leaping Bobb-Jones, who flicked the ball into the basket for the game-winning points with 1.6 seconds left. The Dolphins were unable to put a shot on target at the buzzer.

Le Moyne, which beat the then-#17 Greyhounds, 66-64, in Worcester, Massachusetts on December 17, returns to action on Tuesday against American International at 7:30 p.m.
