Le Moyne College Men's Basketball vs. Saint Michael's

Syracuse, N.Y. – Graduate student center Jim Janson (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) scored 18 points to lead the Le Moyne College men's basketball team to a 72-60 win over Saint Michael's on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Court.

Janson, who went 7-for-8 from the field, added five rebounds and two assists to his game-high point total. Senior guard Gamal Mohamed (North Plainfield, N.J./Immaculata) recorded 15 first-half points, while grabbing six rebounds, dishing out three assists and recording two steals. Junior forward Brian Zapisek (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) registered 12 points, all of which came in the opening 5:51 of the game.

Greg Grippo led the Purple Knights with 16 points, 10 of which came in the second half. Corey Crawford recorded 10 points and grabbed a game high-tying seven rebounds, while dishing out three assists.

After Corey Crawford hit a three-pointer to pull the Purple Knights within 11-8 with 15:40 remaining in the first half, the Dolphins rattled off 14 straight points over a span of 2:39 to take control of the game. Zapisek hit a shot from three-point range and recorded a traditional three-point play in the run, while Mohamed and freshman forward Connor Mahoney (Hanover, Mass./BC High/Brooks School) nailed three-pointers and sophomore forward Ryan Romich (Groton, Mass./Groton-Dunstable/Vermont Academy) capped the streak with a lay-up with 12:43 left.

Following two baskets from each team over the next 2:39, the Purple Knights recorded a 9-2 run to get within 10 points (31-21) with 7:44 left in the half. James Cambronne had four of the points, while Grippo hit a three-pointer and Mike Thompson made a lay-up.

The Dolphins responded with a 16-5 run over the next 5:42 to take their largest lead of the game. Mohamed hit a pair of pull-up jumpers and a three-pointer in the span, while Janson had five points, Mahoney knocked down a jump shot and senior guard Derrek Tartt (Chicago, Ill./Oak Park Fenwick/UAlbany) converted a jumper.

Grippo nailed a three-pointer and Dom Ditlefsen converted a free throw to pull the Purple Knights within 47-30 at the intermission.

After the teams traded points over the opening five and one-half minutes of the second half, Janson made back-to-back lay-ups to push Le Moyne's lead to 57-36 with 13:33 remaining.

The Purple Knights scored 10 of the next 14 points to get within 15 points with 9:02 left. Grippo and Ditlefsen hit three-pointers in the span, while Crawford and Thompson had baskets in the paint.

The Dolphins countered with five straight points to take their last 20-point lead of the contest with 7:27 to play. Janson recorded the first three points on a lay-up and a free throw and then junior guard Nate Champion (Logansport, Ind./Logansport) made a pair of free throws.

Saint Michael's (5-14, 2-13 NE-10) responded with nine consecutive points and 14 of the game's next 18 points to get within 70-60 with 1:34 remaining. Ditlefsen started the run with two free throws, Crawford followed with a jumper, Derek Knutty then had a fast-break dunk and Grippo capped the 9-0 spurt with a three-pointer. Following a pair of fast-break lay-ups by freshman guard Qwadere Lovell (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon), Grippo nailed his fifth three-pointer of the game to pull the Purple Knights within 10.

Champion, who returned to action after missing the last seven games, then closed out the game's scoring by making a pair of foul shots with 1:28 remaining.

Le Moyne (10-9, 7-8 NE-10), which has won nine straight regular-season meetings with the Purple Knights (last lost on Dec. 9. 2006), returns to action on Wednesday at The College of Saint Rose at 7:30 p.m. The game will mark the 12th contest in the year-long "Upstate Challenge" between the two institutions, which Saint Rose currently leads, 5.5-3.5.
