MBB: EKPERIGIN INVITED TO PORTSMOUTH INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT

Portsmouth, Va. – Le Moyne College senior All-American forward Laurence Ekperigin (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) has accepted an invitation to the 58th annual Portsmouth Invitational Tournament in Portsmouth, Virginia from April 7-10. Ekperigin joins 63 of the nation’s top seniors at the prestigious showcase.

Ekperigin, who is one of three Division II players selected to the showcase along with Stephen Dennis of Kutztown and Illinois-transfer Jamar Smith of Southern Indiana, led the Northeast-10 Conference as a senior in scoring (21.6 ppg), rebounding (12.1 rpg) and blocks (72), while tying for the national lead in double-doubles with 20. Ekperigin, who finished his career as the program’s all-time leading scorer (1,966 points) and rebounder (1,171), was named to the NABC, Daktronics and Basketball Times All-America First Teams previously this season. He also earned Daktronics and NABC East Region First Team accolades as well as Northeast-10 Conference First Team honors following the completion of the season.

Ekperigin will play for the Cherry, Bekaert & Holland team coached by Dennis Koutoufas and Ben Moore. He will be joined by South Carolina’s Devan Downey, Edwin Ubiles of Siena, Jordan Eglseder of Northern Iowa, Theo Robertson of California, Dior Lowhorn of San Francisco, David Kool of Western Michigan and Dennis. The team’s first game will be Thursday at 7:00 p.m.

Each year for 57 years the P.I.T has invited 64 of the best college basketball players (seniors) from across the nation to participate in a four-day, 12 game tournament in front of representatives from every NBA team. The tournament drew the attention of NBA Scouts and General Managers in the mid-70’s when players like Dave Cowens, John Lucas, Walt Szczerbiak and Bobby Cremins came to Portsmouth to play. Soon the word spread and approximately 200 Scouts, General Managers and Representatives of all 30 NBA teams began to come to see players like John Stockton, Dennis Rodman, Tim Hardaway, Scottie Pippen and others. Today scouts from numerous international leagues have joined in on the annual April pilgrimage to Portsmouth. Over the years the P.I.T. has been a showcase for five of the 50 greatest players in NBA History (Rick Barry, Earl "The Pearl" Monroe, Dave Cowens, John Stockton, Scottie Pippen) and for many others who have gone on to NBA stardom.
