MBB: LE MOYNE GRINDS OUT 71-64 NON-CONFERENCE WIN OVER FELICIAN

Syracuse, N.Y. - Junior Laurence Ekperigin (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) and freshman Christopher Johnson (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) each netted 21 points and senior Phil Barnes (Georgetown, Cayman Islands/Clinton C. C.) recorded a double-double as the Le Moyne College men's basketball team hung on for a 71-64 non-conference win over Felician College on Monday afternoon at Ted Grant Court.

Ekperigin, tabbed as the Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Week earlier Monday, scored 19 first-half points on perfect nine-for-nine shooting from the field. He finished with seven rebounds, three blocks and three steals in 28 minutes of action. Johnson knocked down five three-pointers, including four in the first half, en route to his 21 points. Barnes turned in a double-double for the second straight game. He followed up Saturday's 18-point, 11-rebound performance with 10 points and 13 boards against the Golden Falcons. He pulled down eight offensive rebounds in the win and netted a pair of three-point baskets. Junior Damani Corbin (Brooklyn, N.Y./Frederick Douglas) handed out a game-high six assists for Le Moyne.

The Dolphins never trailed in the second half, pushing their lead out to a game-high 11 points with just under 16 minutes remaining. The Golden Falcons cut their halftime deficit to six points 1:26 into the second period before Le Moyne used a 6-1 spurt, capped by a layup from junior guard Durett Miles (Schenectady, N.Y./Schenectady), to take the 11 point lead.

Felician answered back with an 8-2 run of its own to pull within five points with just over 14 minutes remaining. The scoring margin bounced between six and 10 points over the next eight minutes before Felician closed to within four on a pair of occasions. Barnes drilled a three-pointer from the left corner to push Le Moyne's lead back to seven with 2:53 remaining in the game. Freshman guard James Cormier (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull/Proctor Academy (N.H.)) hit four free throws in the final 1:14 to close out the game.

The Dolphins jumped out to a 7-0 lead over the opening 1:49 of the contest. Barnes opened the scoring with a conventional three-point play and Ekperigin followed with consecutive layups. The Golden Falcons responded with a 12-5 streak to even the score at 12 apiece with 15:15 remaining in the stanza. The two squads traded baskets over the next eight minutes, capped by a free throw from Felician's Demetrius Boards to deliver a 23-23 tie.

Over the final seven minutes of the half, the Dolphins used an 18-10 streak to take a 41-33 lead into the intermission. Johnson hit four consecutive three-pointers in the spurt, while Ekperigin added four points.

Le Moyne (9-9) returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 24 in Worcester, Mass. against Assumption at 3:30 p.m.
