FOUR MORE NCAA BANNERS WILL BE UNVEILED SATURDAY
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Le Moyne College will honor its four NCAA tournament teams from 2005 with a banner unveiling ceremony at halftime of Saturday’s women’s basketball game against Assumption. The 2005 men’s golf, men’s lacrosse, men’s soccer and softball teams will be on hand for a celebration at approximately 1:30 p.m.
For the fourth consecutive season, the Le Moyne College men’s golf team was chosen for the NCAA Division II Northeast Regional. The Dolphins finished in a tie for fifth among the eight teams. With a three-day total of 220 strokes, sophomore Dan McCarthy (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) finished in a three-way tie for medalist honors at the regional championship. He was named an Honorable Mention Division II All-America for his efforts.
Also for the fourth consecutive season, the Le Moyne College men’s lacrosse team was chosen for the four-team NCAA Division II tournament. The 14-1 Dolphins hosted Limestone in a memorable rematch of the 2004 national championship game. The visiting Saints came away with a 9-8 upset win in front of nearly 2,000 fans – ending Le Moyne’s season and the nation’s longest winning streak at 30 consecutive games. From the 2005 team, seven were named All-America, including National Player of the Year Travis Tarr (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) and Goalkeeper of the Year Jared Corcoran (Concord, N.H./Concord). The 2005 defense allowed just 3.27 goals per game, an NCAA record for all divisions.
For the first time since 1977, the Le Moyne College men’s soccer team earned a berth in the NCAA tournament. The Dolphins surged into the national tournament with their first-ever Northeast-10 Conference Championship. To capture the crown, Le Moyne hit the road to upset top seed and eventual national finalist Franklin Pierce 1-0. Those same Ravens ended Le Moyne’s season at 14-6-2 in the NCAA tournament’s opening round. In a season of great accomplishment, the Dolphins posted 11 shutouts, five Dolphins were named all-conference and sophomore Eric Macias (Silver Spring, Md./Wheaton)was named second team All-America.
In three of its four trips to the NCAA tournament, the Le Moyne College softball team has captured a regional championship. In 2005, the Dolphins battled out of the loser’s bracket on their home field to advance to their third NCAA Division II Championship round. After losing on the opening day of the regional tournament, the Dolphins won five consecutive games – all by two runs or less – to capture the regional championship. Northeast-10 Conference Freshman of the Year Sarah Reed (DeWitt, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) was the winning pitcher in all six Le Moyne NCAA tournament wins and All-America outfielder Lindsay Spaziani (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) hit two key home runs. Head coach Ken King and assistant coach Ed Mahar were honored by their peers as the regional Coaching Staff of the Year. With a 43-11 overall record, Le Moyne registered its second-most wins in program history.
Saturday’s Northeast-10 Conference basketball doubleheader will be televised live throughout Central and Northern New York on Time Warner Sports Channel 26.
General admission tickets ($4 adults, $2 students/senior citizens) for Saturday’s game will be available at the door. Le Moyne College students, faculty and staff will be admitted free with proper identification.
