DOLPHINS RANKED 21ST IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER PRESEASON POLL
Tucson, Ariz. – The Le Moyne College baseball team is ranked 21st in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Preseason Poll, as announced by the publication.
The Dolphins, who won the Northeast-10 Conference Championship last year in their first year in the conference, earned 302 points in the vote of coaches throughout the country to tie for 21st place with Mercyhurst. Le Moyne is the third of three East Region teams ranked amongst the Top 40 in the nation. Franklin Pierce received 510 points to rank ninth in the poll after going 38-19-1 last year and advancing to the Northeast-10 Championship game and the East Regional semifinals, where they were defeated by the Dolphins in both. Defending East Regional champion Southern New Hampshire is 18th with 356 points after posting a 43-15 record last season.
West Chester, which went 46-10 last year en route to winning the national championship, received 628 points to garner the top spot in the poll. Delta State (49-15) ranks second with 614 points after falling to West Chester in last year's National Championship game. Mount Olive (44-10) is third with 608 points, Central Missouri (48-9) came in fourth with 596 points and St. Mary's (Texas) tallied 588 points to place fifth after going 49-11 in 2012.
The Dolphins, who went 43-15-1 last year and finished the season ranked 16th in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll after reaching the East Region championship game, return 17 letterwinners, including five starting position players and one starting pitcher from last year's squad that posted five wins over ranked teams (two over then-#6 Mount Olive and three over Franklin Pierce).
Offensively, the Dolphins are led by a pair of seniors. Senior center fielder Zack Wiley (Toluca Woods, Calif./Crespi) hit a team-best .346 last year en route to being named to the ABCA East Region and Northeast-10 Conference First Teams and the NCBWA East Region Second Team. He also led the team with 15 doubles (tied for 10th in the East Region), 48 runs batted in (tied for fifth in the region), a .458 on-base percentage (fifth in the region) and a .481 slugging percentage. His 74 hits tied for sixth in the East Region, while his 52 runs and 38 walks were each the fifth-best in the region. Senior shortstop Ryan Mahoney (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) hit .295 as a starter in all 59 games played last year. He recorded 48 RBI and four triples to tie for the team lead in both categories, while ranking second in home runs (6) and doubles (13), finishing third in runs scored (41) and slugging percentage (.462) and ranking fourth in hits (69) and stolen bases (15).
Senior righty Casey Cannon (Manasquan, N.J./Saint Rose/U. of Delaware) leads the pitching staff after going 9-0 with a 1.42 earned run average, three shutouts and 61 strikeouts in 82 and one-third innings pitched en route to being named to the Northeast-10 Conference Second Team and the ABCA East Region First Team. Cannon's nine victories tied for the most in the East Region, while he ranked third in the nation in fewest hits per nine innings at 5.2 and eighth in the country in earned run average. Senior righty Kevin Carroll (Jamesville, N.Y./Fabius-Pompey), a third team all-conference selection, went 1-1 with a 1.35 earned run average, 22 strikeouts and a region-best 11 saves in 20 innings over 18 appearances out of the bullpen last season.
The Dolphins open the season with a three-game series at #3 Mount Olive. First pitch of the doubleheader on Saturday, February 16 against the Trojans is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
