BSB: BOSTON COLLEGE RALLIES WITH SIX RUNS IN NINTH INNING FOR 10-6
WIN OVER LE MOYNE
Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Mike Belfiore blasted a grand slam to left
center to lift Boston College to a 10-6 come-from-behind win over
the Le Moyne College baseball team on Sunday afternoon at Eddie
Pellagrini Diamond at Commander Shea Field.
Boston College got on the board with one run in the second inning
as Brad Zapenas opened the frame with a double down the left field
line and scored on a ground out by Harry Darling. Le Moyne
responded in their next at bat as Brett Botsford
(Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baldwinsville) got things going with
a two-out single to centerfield. Matt Marra (Brewerton,
N.Y./Central Square) then reached on a fielding
error. Edmondson and Chris Haynes (Manlius,
N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) each put runs on the board with
RBI singles to give Le Moyne a 2-1 lead.
Boston College regained the lead in the fourth with three runs on
three hits highlighted by Anthony Melchionda's two-RBI double to
right centerfield.
Le Moyne rallied with two outs once again in the seventh inning.
After Dan Sisto (Liverpool, N.Y./CBA) reached on a
fielding error by the third baseman, Botsford put runners on the
corners with a single through the right side. Marra cut the BC lead
to 4-3 with an RBI single to left field that scored pinch-runner
Don Schaaf (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood HS).
Edmondson then blasted a three-run homer down the left field line
to give the Dolphins a 6-4 advantage.
In the bottom of the ninth, Zapenas doubled down the left field
line to open the frame and Mike Sudol followed by reaching on an
error. Following a sac bunt, a strikeout and a walk to load the
bases, Tony Sanchez, who is on the Brooks Wallace Award Watch List,
singled to right field to drive in Zapenas and pinch-runner JB
MacDonald with the game-tying run. After sophomore lefty
Tom McDermott (Amsterdam, N.Y./Amsterdam) took
over on the mound and Mickey Wiswall walked to load the bases,
Belfiore connected on his 11th home run of the season to end the
game.
Senior Brandon Otto (Cicero, N.Y./North Syracuse)
suffered the loss for the Dolphins, yielding four unearned runs,
while striking out five batters over three and two-thirds innings.
Botsford finished the contest with three hits and two runs scored,
while Edmondson had two hits and four runs batted in and Marra
scored twice.
Le Moyne (22-22) returns home to face New York Tech in a
three-game series beginning on Friday at 2:00 p.m. to close out the
season.
