BSB: DOLPHINS EDGE ACC-FOE BOSTON COLLEGE ON TWO-OUT, NINTH-INNING
SINGLE BY EDMONDSON
Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Junior All-American left fielder
Chris Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City)
drove in the game-winning run with two outs in the top of the ninth
inning to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a 5-4 win over
Boston College on Saturday afternoon at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at
Commander Shea Field.
The Eagles opened the scoring in the first inning with a pair of
runs on a home run to center field by Mickey Wiswall. Tony Sanchez,
who doubled down the left field line one batter earlier, scored on
Wiswall's 12th home run of the season.
Le Moyne, which picked up its sixth victory over an ACC-member
school, got a run back in the top half of the third inning on an
opposite-field home run by freshman right fielder Brett
Botsford (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker). The Dolphins
took a 3-2 advantage in the fourth inning with two runs on two hits
and an error. Edmondson was hit by a pitch to open the frame and
moved to third on a single through the right side by senior catcher
Chris Haynes (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius).
Senior shortstop Matt Nandin (North Syracuse,
N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) drove in Edmondson from third
with a sacrifice bunt attempt that the first baseman couldn't
handle, allowing Nandin to reach first and Haynes to move around to
third. Junior center fielder Sean Paino (Wappinger Falls,
N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) followed with a single through the
right side to drive in Haynes with the go-ahead run.
The Dolphins tacked on a run in the seventh to take a two-run
lead. Senior second baseman Chris Murphy (Laurel Hollow,
N.Y./St. Dominic's) singled to center field and Botsford
was hit by a pitch with one out. Following a line out, Edmondson
singled to center field to knock home Murphy.
Boston College rallied in the eighth inning with two runs on a
pair of hits to tie the game at four apiece. Mike Belfiore walked
and Barry Butera singled up the middle to knock Le Moyne starter
Jeff Tardiff (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) from
the game. Pinch-hitter Harry Darling greeted Le Moyne reliever
Luke Nellis (Fonda, N.Y./Fonda-Fultonville) with a
double down the right field line to plate Belfiore from second.
Pinch-hitter Anthony Melchionda then grounded out to second base to
push Butera across home plate with the game-tying run.
Following a pair of ground outs to the shortstop to open the ninth
inning, sophomore third baseman Matt Marra (Brewerton,
N.Y./Central Square) doubled down the right field line and
advanced to third on an errant throw to second base by the right
fielder. Edmondson then dropped a fly ball in front of the center
fielder to plate Marra with the winning run.
The Eagles threatened in the bottom of the ninth, but Nellis shut
the door before they could score. Matt Hamlet walked and Sanchez
singled through the right side with two outs. However, Nellis
struck out Wiswall swinging and Paino made a diving catch on a line
drive by Belfiore to close out the game.
Tardiff struck out five batters over seven and one-third innings
pitched in his return to his home state, while allowing four runs
on seven hits. Nellis allowed two hits over the final one and
two-thirds innings to earn his fourth victory. Botsford, Edmondson
and Haynes each contributed two hits as the Dolphins out-hit the
Eagles 11-9. JB MacDonald struck out seven batters over seven
innings, while allowing four runs on eight hits, but did not factor
into the decision. Belfiore took the loss, yielding one unearned
run on two hits in an inning of work.
Le Moyne (22-21), which moved its record above .500 for the first
time this season, closes out its two-game series with the Eagles on
Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
