BSB: NANDIN LEADS DOLPHINS TO 14-6 WIN OVER UALBANY
Syracuse, N.Y. - Senior shortstop Matt Nandin (North
Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) went 3-for-4 with a
home run and two runs batted in to lead the Le Moyne College
baseball team to a 14-6 win over UAlbany in non-conference action
at Dick Rockwell Field on Tuesday afternoon.
The Dolphins jumped on the Great Danes with three runs on three
hits and an error in the first inning. Junior center fielder
Sean Paino (Wappinger Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham)
blasted a two-run homer to left field to drive in freshman right
fielder Brett Botsford (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W.
Baker), who walked to lead off in the inning. Following a
pop out, senior catcher Chris Haynes (Manlius,
N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) doubled to center field and
came around to score on a fielding error by the left fielder as
Nandin singled.
Le Moyne increased its lead to 8-0 in the second inning with five
runs on two hits and an error. Junior left fielder Chris
Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) drilled a home
run to center field with two outs to drive in Botsford and Paino,
who walked and reached on an error, respectively. After Haynes
walked, Nandin launched a two-run homer to left center.
UAlbany cut its deficit in half with four runs on just one hit and
an error in the fifth inning. Third baseman Pete Eichner and
shortstop Sean Donovan drew consecutive one-out walks before left
fielder Gary Pitcheralle singled back up the middle to load the
bases. Right fielder Brendan Rowland then drew a four-pitch walk
from Le Moyne reliever Tom McDermott (Amsterdam,
N.Y./Amsterdam) to force in Eichner. Catcher Ryan Gugel
plated Donovan with a fielder's choice to first base and
Pitcheralle came in to score on a throwing error by the first
baseman. Center fielder Dave West capped the scoring in the frame
with a groundout to third to knock in Rowland.
The Dolphins plated six runs on three hits and an error in the
seventh inning to blow the game open. Edmondson led off the inning
by drawing a walk and moved to second on a single up the middle by
Haynes. On a sac bunt attempt by Nandin, the third baseman threw
the ball away to allow Nandin to reach second and Edmondson to
score. Following a walk, junior first baseman Rich Brown
(Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) singled through the left side to
drive in Haynes and load the bases. UAlbany relief pitcher Mike
Baltera then threw two wild pitches to allow Nandin and sophomore
third baseman Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central
Square) to score, prior to walking senior second baseman
Chris Murphy (Laurel Hollow, N.Y./St. Dominic's).
Sophomore designated hitter Don Schaaf (Middle Island,
N.Y./Longwood HS) followed by lifting a sac fly to center
field to knock in Brown from third. After Botsford drew his third
walk of the game and UAlbany changed pitchers for the fourth time,
Paino greeted Alexander Beaulieu with a double to left center to
score Murphy with the inning's final run.
The Great Danes got one run back in the eighth inning on a solo
home run to center by first baseman Mike Tirri. They plated their
final run in the ninth inning as Donovan scored on a wild pitch
after walking to open the frame.
McDermott improved to 4-3 on the season by striking out three
batters over two and two-thirds innings. The southpaw allowed just
one unearned run on one hit and a walk. Paino and Edmondson each
drove in three runs and scored twice, while Haynes crossed the
plate three times.
Le Moyne (21-21) returns to action on Saturday, May 9 for the start
of a two-game series at Boston College. First pitch is slated for
4:00 p.m.
