BSB: DOLPHINS SWEPT IN DOUBLEHEADER AT STONY BROOK, 8-4 AND
3-2
Stony Brook, N.Y. - Brian Witkowski went 5-for-8 with a pair of
runs scored to lead Stony Brook to a doubleheader sweep of the Le
Moyne College baseball team on Saturday afternoon at University
Field. The Seawolves took the first game 8-4 and rallied for a 3-2
victory in the nightcap.
Le Moyne opened the scoring in the first game with a pair of runs
in the first inning. Freshman second baseman Brett Botsford
(Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) and senior shortstop
Matt Nandin (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North
Syracuse) led off the contest with back-to-back singles.
Following a wild pitch and a fly out, senior catcher Chris
Haynes (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) drove in
Botsford with a single to right field. Junior centerfielder
Sean Paino (Wappinger Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham)
then knocked in Nandin with a single through the right side.
The Seawolves answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom of
the second inning. Rob Dyer reached on an error and Steve Mazzurco
doubled down the left field line to open the frame. Two batters
later, Dyer scored on a groundout by Keith Fier before Mazzurco
knotted the contest on a single by Witkowski.
The Dolphins regained their lead with a run in the fourth and a run
in the fifth. Freshman first baseman Joe Lombardi
(Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) doubled down the right
field line with one out in the fourth to plate sophomore third
baseman Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central
Square), who reached on a single. In the fifth, Nandin
reached on a one-out single and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
Following a walk to Haynes, Paino singled through the left side to
knock in Nandin.
The Seawolves responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the
frame before scoring four times in the sixth inning. After a
two-out hit batsman, Michael Tansey drilled a two-run homer to left
field to tie the game at four apiece.
In the sixth, Mazzurco recorded a lead-off single before moving to
second on a sac bunt. Fier followed with a double to right center
to drive in Mazzurco with the eventual game-winning run. After a Le
Moyne pitching change, Witkowski doubled to right field. Chad
Marshall followed with a run-scoring fielder's choice to score
Fier, while Michael Stephan plated Witkowski with a single through
the right side. Stony Brook capped the game's scoring as Marshall
scored from third on an infield single by Tansey.
Marc Brown picked up the win for the Seawolves by tossing two
scoreless innings in relief of starter Mike Errigo. Sophomore
righty Jeff Tardiff (Framingham, N.Y./Framingham)
suffered the loss, allowing six runs (four earned) in five and
two-thirds innings, while striking out six batters. Nandin
registered three hits in the contest, while Botsford and Paino each
recorded two.
In the nightcap, the Dolphins took a 2-0 lead with single runs in
each of the third and fourth innings. Junior designated hitter
Rich Brown (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) led off the third
with a single to left center. Following a sac bunt by Don
Schaaf (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) and a Botsford
single up the middle, Nandin lifted a sac fly to right center to
drive in Brown. In the fourth, Paino reached on a fielder's choice
and then moved to second on a wild pitch with one out. Marra
followed with a double to left field to plate Paino.
Stony Brook cut its deficit in half with a run in the bottom of the
fourth inning. The Seawolves loaded the bases with one out on a
single by Stephan and walks to Tansey and Dyer. After a pop out,
Pat Cantwell walked to force in Stephan.
The Seawolves plated the tying and winning run on a hit and two
errors in the seventh inning. Witkowski and Marshall opened the
frame with a single and hit by pitch, respectively. As Nick Thode
reached on a fielder's choice, Witkowski moved to third and scored
on a Le Moyne throwing error. After a pitching change by the
Dolphins, Stephan reached on a fielding error, allowing Thode to
score from second base.
Nick Tropeano picked up his second win of the season by striking
out seven batters over seven innings, while allowing just two runs
on nine hits. Jeremy Nowak registered the save by tossing two
scoreless innings. Senior right-hander Brandon Otto
(Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) took the loss after
yielding two runs (one earned) in one and one-third innings
pitched. Haynes led the Le Moyne offense with three hits in the
contest.
Le Moyne (3-12) completes its four-game series with the Seawolves
with a doubleheader on Sunday. The two teams will play a
seven-inning contest beginning at 12:00 p.m., followed by a
nine-inning game.
