BSB: TROY DOWNS LE MOYNE, 4-1, WITH LATE RUNS
Troy, Ala. - Bart Pettus drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in
the seventh inning to lead Troy University to a 4-1 win over the Le
Moyne College baseball team on Friday night at Riddle-Pace
Field.
The Trojans opened the scoring in the contest with a run in the
bottom of the third inning. Following an out Pettus singled to
second base, J.R. Myers singled through the left side and Michael
Precise singled to third base to load the bases. Ryan Ditthardt
followed with a groundout to shortstop to knock in Pettus.
Following three scoreless innings, the Dolphins evened the score
with a run on two hits in the top of the seventh. Sophomore first
baseman Don Schaaf (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood)
opened the frame with a double down the left field line. He was
replaced on the base paths as senior second baseman Chris
Murphy (Laurel Hollows, N.Y./St. Dominic's) reached on a
fielder's choice. After pinch running for Murphy, freshman
Matthew Ciraco (White Plains, N.Y./Perkiomen
School) stole second base. Senior shortstop Matt
Nandin (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse)
followed with a walk and advanced to second as Ciraco was thrown
out trying to steal third. Freshman right fielder Brett
Botsford (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) then delivered a
single through the left side to plate Nandin.
The Trojans answered back over their next two at-bats to secure
the victory. Pinch hitter Chad Watson tripled to left center with
one out in the seventh inning. Pettus followed with a sacrifice fly
to left field to drive in Watson with the go-ahead run. In the
eighth inning, Troy tacked on a pair of runs on a two-out, two-run
opposite field home run by Miles Hoyle.
Sophomore righty Jeff Tardiff (Framingham,
Mass./Framingham) went the distance on the mound for the
Dolphins, striking out seven batters, while yielding four runs on
five hits. Jason Walls tossed six scoreless innings for the
Trojans, despite walking seven batters. Drew Hull picked up the win
in relief by registering three strikeouts over three innings, while
allowing a run on two hits and two walks.
Le Moyne (2-9), which has dropped six consecutive games on its
10-day road trip, returns to action on Saturday against the Trojans
at 3:00 p.m. EST. The contest has been moved up from its originally
scheduled time of 7:00 p.m.
