BSB: DOLPHINS DROP 13-5 DECISION AT #1 NATIONALLY-RANKED
GEORGIA
Athens, Ga. - First baseman Rich Poythress blasted a three-run
home run and scored three times to lead #1 nationally-ranked
Georgia to a 13-5 win over Le Moyne College in non-conference
baseball action on Tuesday night at Foley Field.
The Bulldogs, the national runner-up last season, jumped out to a
4-0 lead after the first two innings. Georgia loaded the bases in
the first inning on a hit batsman, an error and a walk to
Poythress. Bryce Massanari was then walked to force in Johnathan
Taylor from third. During the next at-bat Colby May scored on a
wild pitch and Poythress crossed the plate on a subsequent error.
In the second, Demperio walked to lead off the second and then
stole second. Following a fly out, Taylor singled up the middle to
knock in Demperio.
The Dolphins cut their lead deficit in half with a pair of runs in
the top of the third inning. Following two outs, senior shortstop
Matt Nandin (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North
Syracuse) singled to center and advanced to second on a
balk. After freshman Brett Botsford (Baldwinsville,
N.Y./C.W. Baker) reached on an error, Nandin scored on a
wild pitch. Junior left fielder Chris Edmondson (Vestal,
N.Y./Vestal) then delivered a single to right field to
drive in Botsford.
Georgia (13-0), one of just four remaining undefeated teams in the
nation, answered back with three runs in the bottom half of the
frame on a hit and an error. Poythress and Massanari walked
following an inning-opening groundout. Following a Le Moyne
pitching change, Lyle Allen doubled to left center to drive in
Poythress and Massanari. Allen then scored as Demperio reached base
on an error to give the Bulldogs a five run lead.
Poythress, a preseason second team All-America selection by
Baseball America and Louisville Slugger, as well as a
member of the Brooks Wallace Player of the Year and Golden Spikes
Award Watch lists, increased Georgia's lead to 10-2 in the fourth
inning with a three-run homer to center field. Levi Hyams and Matt
Cerione singled around an out to begin the inning. Following a
strikeout, Poythress blasted his sixth home run of the season.
Le Moyne narrowed the Georgia lead to 10-5 with three runs on four
hits in the top of the sixth inning. Botsford and senior catcher
Chris Haynes (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) each singled
around a strikeout to start the frame. Junior centerfielder
Sean Paino (Wappinger Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham)
then tripled to center field to knock in his team-best sixth and
seventh runs of the season. Sophomore third baseman Matt
Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central Square) followed with a
single to right field to plate Paino.
Georgia capped the game's scoring with three runs in the eighth
inning. Hyams and Peter Verdin singled following an out and then
each stole a base. Zach Cone singled up the middle to plate Hyams,
while May drove in the final two runs with a double to center.
Nandin and Paino led the Le Moyne offense with a pair of hits
each, while Hyams was the only Bulldog to record multiple hits.
Cecil Tanner picked up the victory for the Bulldogs, yielding just
two unearned runs over four innings pitched. Senior right hander
Brandon Otto (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse)
suffered the loss, allowing six runs (four earned) on just one hit
over two and two-thirds innings pitched.
