BSB: DOLPHINS OPEN SERIES AT LONGWOOD WITH 7-3 WIN
Farmville, Va. - Junior centerfielder Sean Paino (Wappinger
Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) went 2-for-5 and drove in
three runs to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a 7-3 win
at Longwood on Friday at Lancer Stadium in the opening game of a
three-game series.
The Dolphins opened the scoring in the top of the second inning
with a pair of runs. Senior catcher Chris Haynes (Manlius,
N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) started the frame with a single
through the left side. After stealing second, Haynes scored as
Paino doubled down the left field line. Following a groundout,
third baseman Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central
Square) singled through the left side to plate Paino from
third. The Lancers got one run back in the bottom half of the
inning on a solo home run to left field by designated hitter Matt
Gwaltney.
Le Moyne regained its two-run lead in the top of the third with a
single run. Senior shortstop Matt Nandin (North Syracuse,
N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) opened the inning with a
single to right field. Two batters later, junior designated hitter
Chris Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City)
singled to right field to knock in Nandin from second.
Following four scoreless innings, the Lancers pulled to within 3-2
with a run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Brant Jones and
David Smiy Jr. each singled to open the frame. After a fly out, a
pitching change and a hit batsman, Jon Quigley flied out to right
field to plate Jones.
The Dolphins answered back with four runs on three hits and an
error in the top of the ninth inning. Marra led off the inning with
his first career home run. Following a pitching change by the
Lancers, sophomore first baseman Don Schaaf (Middle Island,
N.Y./Longwood HS) walked, advanced to second on a passed
ball and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Nandin followed with a
single through the right side to drive in Schaaf. After a
strikeout, Nandin stole second, Edmondson was intentionally walked
and Haynes walked to load the bases. Paino then gave the Dolphins a
five-run lead with a single to center that knocked in Nandin and
Edmondson. Robby Newman homered to lead off the bottom of the ninth
inning, but the Lancers could not cut into their deficit any
further.
Sophomore right-hander Jeff Tardiff (Framingham,
Mass./Framingham) allowed just two runs over seven and
one-third innings pitched, while striking out six batters and not
allowing a walk. Junior reliever Tom McDermott (Amsterdam,
N.Y./Amsterdam) recorded the final five outs to pick up
his first save of the season. Nandin, Edmondson and Marra joined
Paino with two hits apiece. Troy Dickman suffered the loss for
Longwood, yielding four run on eight hits over eight innings.
Garrett Lythgoe gave up three runs on two hits and three walks in
just one inning of work.
