BSB: LE MOYNE SHUT OUT BY TULANE, 6-0, IN SERIES
FINALE
New Orleans, La. - Josh Zeid struck out three batters over seven
scoreless innings and Jeremy Schaffer went 2-for-4 with a home run
and three runs batted in to lead Tulane University to a 6-0 victory
over the Le Moyne College baseball team on Sunday afternoon at
Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
The Green Wave opened the scoring with three runs on two hits in
the first inning. After Nick Boullosa was hit by a pitch and Josh
Prince walked, Seth Henry singled through the right side to drive
in Boullosa. Rob Segedin followed with a sacrifice fly to drive in
Prince and Schaffer picked up his first hit of the game with a
run-scoring single through the right side to knock in Henry. In the
second inning, Tulane loaded the bases on a double and a pair of
walks, but freshman right-hander Derek Zielinski
(Schenectady, N.Y./Colonie Central) came out of the
bullpen to induce three groundouts without letting a runner
score.
Following five scoreless innings, the Green Wave added three
insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh. Segedin walked with
one out and Schaffer followed with a home run to left field. After
a single down the right field line by Sam Honeck and a fly out,
Steve Moritz doubled to plate Honeck with the final run of the
contest.
Freshman southpaw Mark Kuzma (Waverly,
N.Y./Waverly) suffered the loss for the Dolphins, allowing
three runs on three hits and three walks in just one inning of
work. Zielinski struck out two over 3.1 scoreless innings to keep
the Dolphins within striking distance. Freshman outfielder
Brett Botsford (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker)
led the Dolphins at the plate with two of the team's five hits.
Zeid, a senior who pitched for two seasons at Vanderbilt, limited
the Dolphins to just four hits over seven innings. Ryan Doiron and
DJ Ponder each tossed a scoreless inning for the Green Wave to
secure the shutout.
Le Moyne (1-3) returns to action for the start of a three-game
series on Friday, Feb. 27 at Longwood at 3:00 p.m.
