BSB: DOLPHINS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER AT TULANE TAKING GAME ONE, 5-4,
IN 10 INNINGS
New Orleans, La. - Senior second baseman Chris Murphy
(Laurel Hollow, N.Y./St. Dominic's) singled to center
field in the top of the 10th inning to drive in the game-winning
run to give the Le Moyne College baseball team a 5-4 win over
Tulane University in the first game of a doubleheader at Greer
Field at Turchin Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Green Wave down
the Dolphins 14-1 in seven innings in the nightcap.
The Dolphins got on the scoreboard in the opening inning. Senior
catcher Chris Haynes (Manlius,
N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) singled to center field with
two outs to drive in junior leftfielder Chris Edmondson
(Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City), who had doubled to
right center. The Green Wave answered back in the bottom of the
inning to tie the game. Seth Henry singled to center with two outs
and Rob Segedin followed with a double to left to plate Henry.
Le Moyne regained the lead in the top of the fourth inning with
two runs. Haynes led off the frame with his 10th career home run.
Junior centerfielder Sean Paino (Wappinger Falls, N.Y./Roy
C. Ketcham) was then hit by a pitch and Murphy followed
with a single to center. Following a groundout moved each runner up
a base, sophomore first baseman Don Schaaf (Middle Island,
N.Y./Longwood) laid down a sacrifice bunt to score
Paino.
Tulane took its only lead in the contest in the eighth inning
following single runs in each of the sixth, seventh and eighth
innings. Following a walk to Andrew Rodgers and a double to left by
Jeremy Schaffer in the sixth inning, Drew Allain reached on a
throwing error, allowing Rodgers to score from third. In the bottom
of the seventh inning, Nick Boullosa walked, stole second, moved to
third on a ground out and scored on a sacrifice fly by Henry to
right to tie the game at three apiece. The Green Wave took a 4-3
advantage when Scott Powell, who was pinch running for Schaffer,
scored from second on a double down the right field line by
Boullosa.
Le Moyne answered back in the top of the ninth with a run to force
extra innings and plated the winning run in the next inning. Schaaf
singled to left field with one out in the ninth and moved to third
on a single to right field by sophomore pinch-hitter Rich
Brown (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal). Senior shortstop Matt
Nandin (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse)
knocked in Schaaf on a fielder's choice to knot the score. With one
out in the tenth, Paino singled to center and then stole second.
Murphy then recorded a single of his own to center to drive in
Paino. Junior Tom McDermott (Amsterdam,
N.Y./Amsterdam) pitched a perfect tenth inning to register
the victory.
Sophomore right-hander Jeff Tardiff (Framingham,
Mass./Framingham) allowed two runs (one earned) on six
hits over six innings, while striking out one batter. McDermott
tossed 3.1 innings, striking out five, while yielding one run on
two hits. Paino registered three hits and scored twice, while
Murphy, Haynes and freshman outfielder Brett Botsford
(Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) each had two hits.
In the nightcap, the Green Wave plated runs in each of the first
four innings to take a commanding lead. Boullosa led off the first
with a single to center and scored three batters later on a double
to left center by Segedin. In the second, Rodgers opened the frame
with a walk, Sam Honeck doubled down the right field line and Steve
Moritz drove in Rodgers with a sac fly to center.
After Le Moyne plated a run in the top of the third on a sacrifice
fly by Nandin to score freshman Matthew Ciraco (White
Plains, N.Y./Perkiomen School), Tulane broke the game open
with eight runs in the bottom of the frame. Henry and Segedin each
singled to start the inning. After Segedin stole second, Schaffer
was intentionally walked by junior southpaw Luke Nellis
(Fonda, N.Y./Fonda-Fultonville) to load the bases to set
up a lefty-lefty matchup with Honeck. Honeck then blasted a grand
slam to give the Green Wave a 6-2 lead. Tulane then loaded the
bases again on a walk to Moritz, a single by Powell and a single by
Boullosa. Josh Prince followed with a double down the left field
line to drive in Moritz and Powell, but Boullosa was thrown out on
the play by Nandin. After junior Al Ondrako (Cortland,
N.Y./Cortland) entered the game for Nellis, Henry drilled
a two-run homer to cap the frame's scoring.
The Green Wave tacked on three runs in the bottom of the fourth
inning and a run in the sixth. Rodgers opened the fourth by
reaching on an error, Honeck followed with a walk and Moritz was
hit by a pitch to load the bases. Powell then singled to plate
Allain, who had pinch run for Rodgers. Jamie Bruno, who came in to
pinch run for Honeck, scored from third on a sac fly to center by
Boullosa and Moritz capped the inning on a groundout by Prince.
Tulane finished the contest's scoring in the sixth as Powell
tripled to right center with one out and scored on a groundout to
second by Boullosa.
Jonathan Garrett picked up the win for the Green Wave, tossing six
innings, yielding just an unearned run on seven hits. Nellis
suffered the loss, allowing nine runs on nine hits over 2.2
innings. Ondrako allowed four runs (three earned) in 1.1 innings,
while senior Brandon Otto (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North
Syracuse) gave up one run on two hits in two innings.

Wave on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
