BSB: EDMONDSON LEADS DOLPHINS TO 6-2 WIN OVER XAVIER
Cincinnati, Ohio – Senior left fielder Chris
Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) went 4-for-5
with two runs batted in to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team
to a 6-2 win over Xavier on Tuesday afternoon at Hayden Field.
The Musketeers opened the game’s scoring with one run on two
hits in the fourth inning. John McCambridge singled to shortstop
with one out and then stole second base. Bobby Freking followed
with a single to center field to drive in McCambridge.
Le Moyne answered back in the fifth with one run on three hits.
Senior center fielder Sean Paino (Wappinger Falls, N.Y./Roy
C. Ketcham) singled and senior first baseman Rich
Brown (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) was hit by a pitch to open the
frame. Following a sacrifice bunt and a ground out, sophomore right
fielder Brett Botsford (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W.
Baker) singled through the left side to plate Brown.
Xavier, which won the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament
championship and appeared in the NCAA tournament last season,
regained the lead in the sixth inning by scoring one run on three
hits. Drew Schmidt and Freking singled around a foul out to start
the inning and force a Le Moyne pitching change. Ben Thomas
followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in
Schmidt.
The Dolphins took the lead in the eighth inning with three runs on
two hits and two errors. Botsford singled, freshman Zach
Wiley (Toluca Woods, Calif./Crespi) walked and sophomore
shortstop Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central
Square) reached on an error to load the bases. Following a
Xavier pitching change, Edmondson singled to right field to drive
in Botsford. Two batters later, Paino grounded out to plate Wiley
from third base. Freshman pinch-hitter Paul Speicher
(Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) followed by reaching on an
error by the third baseman to allow Marra to score.
Le Moyne added a pair of runs on three hits in the ninth inning.
With two outs, Wiley blasted his second home run of the season over
the fence in left field. Marra followed with a double to left and
came around to score on a double to right field by Edmondson.
Junior lefty Tom McDermott (Amsterdam,
N.Y./Amsterdam) earned his first win of the season by
tossing two and one-third scoreless innings in relief of sophomore
right-hander Erik Lambe (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal).
Lambe struck out two batters over the first five and one-third
innings in his first career start, while allowing just two run on
six hits. Senior southpaw Luke Nellis (Fonda,
N.Y./Fonda-Fultonville) picked up his first save of the
season and 10th of his career with four strikeouts over one and
one-third innings of work. Shane Liska suffered the loss for the
Musketeers after all three batters he faced reached base and came
around to score.
Le Moyne (5-6), which improves to 3-0 all-time against the
Musketeers, returns to action at Cincinnati on Wednesday afternoon
at 4:00 p.m.
