BSB: #10 LOUISVILLE CRUISES TO 12-1 WIN OVER LE MOYNE IN SERIES-FINALE
Louisville, Ky. - Ryan Wright and Phil Wunderlich each had two hits and three runs scored to lead 10th-ranked Louisville to a 12-1 win over the Le Moyne College baseball team on Sunday afternoon at Patterson Stadium.
The Cardinals scored four runs on just two hits in the third inning to open the game's scoring. Following a pair of outs to begin the frame, Kyle Grieshaber was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Adam Duvall and Wright then walked to load the bases. Wunderlich then drew a walk on four pitches to force in Grieshaber. Jeff Arnold followed with a single through the left side to plate Duvall and Wright. Stewart Ijames capped the scoring in the inning with a single to right field to drive in Wunderlich.
Louisville, one of just five undefeated teams in the Baseball America Top 25 poll, blew the game open with five runs on three hits in the fifth inning. Wright doubled to right field and Wunderlich was hit by a pitch to start the inning. After a double-steal by Wright and Wunderlich, Arnold walked to load the bases. Ijames followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to knock in Wright and move Wunderlich and Arnold up a base. Cade Stallings, who ended Saturday's game with a walk-off three-run homer in the 10th inning, then singled through the right side to score Wunderlich and Arnold. After a Le Moyne pitching, an out and a walk to Drew Haynes, Grieshaber doubled down the left field line to plate Stallings and Haynes.
The Cardinals added a pair of runs on two hits in the sixth inning. Wright led off the frame by blasting the third pitch he faced over the fence in left field. Wunderlich drilled the next pitch over the wall in left center to give Louisville an 11-0 lead.
Louisville, the preseason favorite to win the BIG EAST, closed out its scoring in the eighth inning with one run on three hits. Justin Haywood and J.J. Ethel each singled around a fly out. After a walk to Ijames, Zak Wasserman singled to second base to knock in Haywood.
The Dolphins got on the scoreboard with one run without recording a hit in the ninth inning. Sophomore shortstop Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central Square) walked with one out and moved to second as sophomore Matthew Ciraco (White Plains, N.Y./Perkiomen School) reached on an error by the second baseman. After junior Don Schaaf (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood HS) was hit by a pitch, freshman Paul Speicher (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) drew a walk to force in Marra.
Derek Self picked up his second win of the campaign with five strikeouts over five scoreless innings, while allowing just four hits. Freshman Jerome Werniuk (Toronto, Ontario/Neil McNeil Catholic) suffered the loss after allowing four runs on five hits and four walks over four innings. Marra recorded two of Le Moyne's five hits on the afternoon.
Le Moyne (4-6), which was held to its fewest hits of the season, remains on the road over the College's Spring Break for a game at Xavier on Tuesday, March 9 at 3:00 p.m.
