BSB: DOLPHINS CLOSE OUT THREE-GAME SERIES AT #21/26 SOUTHERN MISS WITH 12-11 VICTORY

Hattiesburg, Miss. - Senior left fielder Chris Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) recorded two hits and drove in five runs to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a 12-11 upset of #21/26 Southern Miss on Sunday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park.

The Dolphins opened the game by scoring nine runs over the first three innings. Sophomore right fielder Brett Botsford (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) and freshman second baseman Zack Wiley (Toluca Woods, Calif./Crespi) each walked to begin the first inning and got into scoring position on a passed ball. Edmondson then lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to drive in Botsford. After a fly out and a walk to sophomore shortstop Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central Square), freshman third baseman Paul Speicher (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) singled to knock in Wiley.

The Golden Eagles got one run back in the bottom of the first frame on three hits. With one out, Taylor Walker, B.A. Vollmuth and Joey Archer all singled to load the bases. Adam Doleac then grounded out to plate Walker.

Le Moyne extended its lead to 4-1 with a pair of runs in the second inning. Sophomore first baseman Joe Lombardi (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) led off the frame with a single up the middle. Following a pair of outs and a walk to Wiley, Edmondson singled to center field to drive in Lombardi from second base. On a steal of second base by Edmondson, Wiley came in to score.

The Dolphins tacked on five runs on four hits and an error in the third inning. Marra singled and freshman designated hitter Kody O'Connor (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) walked around a fly out to knock Southern Miss starter Geoffrey Thomas out of the game. After a strike out, sophomore catcher Kyle Kalaka (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) singled to center field to plate Marra, while O'Connor scored on a fielding error by the center fielder. Botsford followed with an infield single and Wiley was intentionally walked to load the bases. Edmondson then cleared the bases with a double to put the Dolphins ahead 9-1.

Southern Miss cut into its deficit with three runs on two hits in the bottom half of the third inning. Kameron Brunty singled and Walker reached on a walk to open the frame. After a groundout moved each runner up a base, Archer drove in Brunty with a groundout. Doleac then walked and Mark Ellis was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Anthony Doss followed with a double down the left field line to plate Walker and Doleac, while Ellis was thrown out at home plate to end the inning.

After a scoreless fourth inning, Archer led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a home run to center field. The Dolphins answered back with three runs on two hits and two errors in the sixth inning to push out to a 12-5 advantage. Paino singled and Marra reached on a fielder's choice, in which Paino advanced to second on a muffed throw by the shortstop, to begin the frame. After Speicher reached on a bunt single to load the bases, O'Connor was hit by a pitch to force in Paino. Senior Rich Brown (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) followed by drawing a walk to drive in Marra. Following an out, pinch-runner Vincent Redmond (Ithaca, N.Y./Lansing/Garrett College) scored on a fielding error by the first baseman on a ball hit by Botsford.

The Golden Eagles closed to within 12-11 with a run in the sixth inning and five runs in the seventh frame. Tyler Koelling led off the sixth by reaching on an error and moved to third on a double to left center by Travis Graves. After a ground out, Walker hit a sac fly to center field to score Koelling. In the seventh inning, Archer and Ellis each singled around a fly out. Following a strike out, Koelling singled through the left side to drive in Archer from second base. Graves then walked to load the bases and force a Le Moyne pitching change. On a full-count pitch, Isaac Rodriguez reached on a fielding error that allowed Ellis to score. Walker then singled to center field to clear the bases of Koelling, Graves and pinch-runner Justin Diliberto.

Freshman Jerome Werniuk (Toronto, Ontario/Neil McNeil Catholic) earned his first collegiate victory by striking out five batters over five innings pitched, while allowing five runs on seven hits. Sophomore Erik Lambe (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) tossed the final two and one-third innings to close out the game for the Dolphins. Geoffrey Thomas took the loss for the Golden Eagles after allowing six runs on four hits and five walks in just two and one-third innings pitched.

Le Moyne (4-3), which has won four of its first seven games for the first time since the 1999 season, returns to the diamond on Friday, March 5 at Louisville at 3:00 p.m.
