Golden Eagles fall 6-2 to Le Moyne, The Clarion-Ledger
Hattiesburg, Miss. - Freshman second baseman Zack Wiley (Toluca Woods, Calif./Crespi) went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a 6-2 upset of #21/26 Southern Miss on Friday night at Pete Taylor Park.
The Dolphins opened the game with a pair of runs on three hits in their first time up to bat. Wiley blasted a one-out, 1-2 pitch for a home run to left field. After a strikeout, senior center fielder Sean Paino (Wappinger Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) doubled down the left field line and came around to score on a singled to right field by sophomore shortstop Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central Square).
The Golden Eagles, who advanced to the College World Series last season, cut their deficit in half with one run on one hit in the fourth inning, while leaving three runners left on base. B.A. Vollmuth was hit by a pitch to open the inning and moved to second on a ground out. Anthony Doss then singled to right field to knock in Vollmuth. Travis Graves and Kameron Brunty then walked around a fly out to load the bases. Junior righty Jeff Tardiff (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) was able to get out of the jam by inducing a ground out by Taylor Walker.
The Dolphins got the run back on two hits in the seventh inning. Sophomore catcher Kyle Kalaka (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) singled to right field with one out and proceeded to steal second base. Two batters later, Wiley singled to right field to plate Kalaka.
Le Moyne added three insurance runs on two hits and an intentional walk in the eighth inning to extend its lead to 6-1. Paino singled through the right side to lead off the inning and moved around to third base on a pair of wild pitches. Senior first baseman Rich Brown (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) was then intentionally walked with one out. After a fly out and a stolen base by Brown, redshirt freshman third baseman Ryan Mahoney (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) drilled a three-run homer to left field.
Southern Miss, ranked 21st in this week's Baseball America poll and 26th in the Collegiate Baseball and NCBWA polls, loaded the bases with one out in the ninth inning, but could only score one run. Tyler Koelling, Brunty and Walker each walked on five pitches with one out. After a Le Moyne pitching change, Adam Doleac reached on a fielder's choice to drive in Koelling. Sophomore Erik Lambe (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) then ended the game by striking out Joey Archer.
Tardiff won his seventh straight decision by striking out five batters over seven innings, while allowing just a single run on hour hits. Junior southpaw Tom McDermott (Amsterdam, N.Y./Amsterdam) gave up one run in one and one-third innings pitched, with Lambe inducing a ground out and getting a strikeout to close out the game. Todd McInnis suffered the loss for the Golden Knights after allowing three runs on eight hits over six and two-third innings. McInnis, the preseason Conference USA Pitcher of the Year according to the C-USA coaches and Baseball America, struck out 10 Le Moyne batters.
Le Moyne (3-2), which has won three of its first five games for the first time since 2001, continues its three-game series with the Golden Eagles on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. EST.
