DOLPHINS LACK OF RUN SUPPORT RESULTED IN LOSS.
LAWRENCE, KAN. - The Dolphins drop their 5th straight, losing 13-2 against the Jay Hawks. The loss drops the Dolphins to (2-7) overall. Cory Nelson suffered his first career loss in his first career start giving up 10 earned runs on 2.1 innings of work. Wally Marciel picked up the victory for the Jay Hawks bringing them to (5-5). Marciel lasted five innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits.
Nelson started the game striking out the first Jay Hawk batter of the game. Nelson quickly ran into trouble after walking his next batter faced. The floodgates came open, starting with a John Allman double to right center bringing in Robby Price. Proceeding Allman's double, Ryne Price drove a triple to right field, which tacked on 2 more runs. Nelson pitched himself out of trouble striking out the last batter of the inning he faced.
The Dolphins went down quickly 1-2-3 in the top of the third. The Jay Hawks unleashed a 6 run attack in the bottom half of the inning expanding the lead to ten. The six run inning started by a grand slam delivered by Ryne Price took the wind out of Nelson and the Dolphins. A double, followed by a couple scattered singles ended Nelson's outing. Tom McDermontt came in to relieve Nelson after Nick Faunce singled through the right side. McDermott would shut down the Jay Hawks in his 2.2 innings of relief allowing zero hits.
The Dolphins would answer by adding their only two runs of the game in the top of the fourth inning. Mike Brown delivered a seeing-eye single through the left side that started the inning. Phil St. Amant followed with a double to center field that advanced Brown to third base. Both runs were generated by reaching on a fielder's choice. Both Corey O'neill and Sean Piano would generate the production. The Dolphins were unable to put up runs after the fourth inning. T.J. Walz would come in to close the game for the Jay Hawks sending the Dolphins to (2-7) and improving the Jay Hawks to 5-5.
Head coach Steve Owens used five pitchers throughout the game for the Dolphins. Despite the lack of production, five Dolphins had multi-hit games. Stephen Crawford (2-5), Mike Brown (2-4), Phil St. Amant (2-4), Chris Murphy (2-4), all delivered multi-hit games.
