EVANSVILLE BLANKS LE MOYNE 7-0, O'NEILL REGISTERS TWO HITS FOR DOLPHINS
MUNCIE, Ind. - First baseman Kasey Wahl smacked two home runs and registered four hits to propel Evansville past Le Moyne 7-0 over Le Moyne in the final day of the Ball State Invitational. The Aces (14-7) have won five straight games, while Le Moyne dips to 2-13 on the season. Junior first baseman Corey O'Neill (Pittsford, N.Y./McQuaid) had two of Le Moyne's six hits.
Evansville, a member of the Missouri Valley Conference, pounded out 16 hits off four Le Moyne pitchers. Starter Brandon Otto (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) allowed four runs on 10 hits and struck out three in six innings of work. Otto (0-4) had allowed just one run heading into the bottom of the fifth when Wahl broke the game open with a three-run home run.
Three Evansville pitchers combined to blank the Dolphins. It marked the first time Le Moyne's offense was shut out this season and the first time since Charleston Southern blanked Le Moyne 8-0 on Feb. 28, 2006 - a span of 62 games. It also marked the first time this season Le Moyne's bats did not record an extra base hit.
Evansville starter Wade Kapteyn (2-1) collected the win with a four-hit, four-strikeout performance over five innings. Ben Norton fanned four and allowed just one hit in three innings and Sean McCarthy allowed one hit in the ninth.
The Dolphins mounted rallies in the third and fourth innings. Matt Nandin (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) led off the third with a single, moved to second on a base on balls and the Dolphins had runners at second and third with two out, but were unable to score. Phil St. Amant (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) and O'Neill led off the fourth with back-to-back singles, but Evansville forced St. Amant at third on a bunt attempt and Kapteyn struck out the final two hitters of that inning to escape trouble.
Le Moyne opens the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference portion of
its schedule with a doubleheader on Saturday at Rider.
