For the fifth consecutive year, Le Moyne College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has partnered with H.W. Smith Elementary School for the 'Phinatic about Reading program.  Ten student-athletes from the men's basketball, men's soccer, baseball and women's lacrosse teams took time to present the elementary school children with the five-month long reading program to encourage reading books outside of the classroom. The student-athletes introduced themselves at the assembly and told the children about their sport and their favorite book. A few of the student-athletes favorite books were:

Jim Janson, Men's Basketball - Where The Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak
Nate Champion,  Men's Basketball - Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Suess
Mike Goodman, Men's Basketball - To Kill and Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Mike Martin, Men's Soccer - Harry Potter Books by Joanne Rowling
Laura Hoffman, Women's Lacrosse - Twilight Books, by Stephanie Meyer
Mark Demarest, Men's Soccer - Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Numeroff
Connor Biolsi, Men's Soccer - The Very Hungry Caterpillar, by Eric Carle

The assembly ended with the school children escorting the student-athletes to their classroom to read. The reading program for this academic year will continue into March 2013. Throughout the program, for every four books a child reads, they will receive two tickets to a Le Moyne College sporting event (Men's and Women's Basketball, Men's and Women's Lacrosse or Baseball). The classroom that reads the most books will receive a pizza party with Le Moyne College student-athletes at Levy Middle School and the top readers in each classroom will receive a tour of Le Moyne College and pizza party in the newly-renovated cafeteria on campus, also with Le Moyne College student-athletes. Finally, to show appreciation to our cooperating teachers and administrators, each will receive two free tickets to any Le Moyne College sporting event for the 2012-13 season.
