LE MOYNE STUDENT-ATHLETE SUCCESS REACHES RECORD LEVELS

Le Moyne’s Athletic Department has released the fall 2011 academic report that highlights record-setting performances in the classroom for student-athletes. During the 2011 fall semester, Le Moyne student-athletes achieved an average GPA of 3.19, boosting their overall cumulative GPA to 3.13. Additionally, among the 305 student-athletes, 95 – nearly one-third of all student-athletes – achieved a GPA of 3.5 or higher. These 95 student-athletes represent the College’s highest total on record.

Additionally, 61% of all student-athletes (187) achieved a GPA of 3.0 or above. Since the 2003-04 academic year, Le Moyne student-athletes have maintained an average cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for a record-setting 17 consecutive semesters.

“I am so proud of our student- athletes and our coaches for practicing what we preach,” said Le Moyne Assistant Vice President and Director of Athletics Matt Bassett. “One of our guiding principles is rooted in the pursuit of academic excellence and these results clearly express the commitment our student-athletes and our coaches have toward this academics first and always philosophy.”

Of the 17 athletic teams at Le Moyne, 14 earned a semester GPA of 3.0 or higher. The men’s tennis team earned the top honor for the semester with a team GPA of 3.57, with women’s cross country next with a 3.52 semester GPA.

Bassett continued, “This is a clear testament to the preparedness of the young people who come to Le Moyne. Our student-athletes enroll at the College with the desire to pursue a very rigorous academic experience while competing at the very highest level of Division II athletics. Congratulations are in order to our entire campus community, particularly our enrollment management division and our faculty, for creating an environment where the concept of the student-athlete, consistent with the College’s OneLeMoyne vision, is thriving.”

Academic excellence is not limited to the results achieved during the fall 2011 semester. Over the past year, Le Moyne student-athletes have collected numerous accolades recognizing their academic performance. In the fall of 2011, the NCAA issued its annual report on Division II graduation rates and reported Le Moyne's student-athlete graduation rate for 2010 was 89%, compared to the national average for all other Division II institutions of 49%. Last summer, 43 student-athletes were awarded the Division II Athletic Director Association Academic Achievement Award for maintaining a GPA of 3.5 or higher through four semesters, while in the spring of 2011 a record number 54 student-athletes will honored at the fifth Annual Le Moyne Scholar-Athlete Breakfast for maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or greater through two semesters.
