In 1985, nearly a decade after competing on the cross country and track teams, Gerry Mahon returned to his alma mater as the women’s cross country coach. He was named head men’s coach 1996 and has guided both cross country teams ever since.
In his inaugural season coaching the men, Mahon guided them to the conference championship. His work was honored by his peers as he was named the league’s coach of the year that season.
Mahon has spent countless hours in planning, preparation and
execution as the director of Le Moyne’s annual invitational
and helped bring thousands of local high school runners to campus
for similar events.
Mahon’s charges have garnered recognition both in
competition and in the classroom. Ten consecutive times, his
women’s teams have earned All-America academic team
recognition and the men’s team has been honored seven times.
Runners of both genders have consistently ranked among the top in
the league and in the region under Mahon’s guidance.
A 1976 Le Moyne College graduate with a degree in sociology, Mahon works as a recreational therapist at Crouse Hospital. He works in the chemical dependency services program. Mahon resides in Manlius with his wife Beth and their son, Mike.
